A 19-year-old man is in the critical care unit at Elkhart General Hospital after a near-drowning incident at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Mishawaka.

The man was swimming with six friends in a gravel pit on private property off Blackberry Road, when he decided to swim across the pit area, Indiana Conservation Officer Seth Owens told SBT24/7News.

“He made it to between 100-feet and 200-feet across, when he began struggling and went under the water,” Owens said.

A bystander saw the man slip under the water's surface.

“He jumped in and swam out to help him. The bystander pulled him out and then he was taken to the hospital,” Owens said.
