SOUTH BEND — A South Bend man is on the run after police say he started a fire that critically injured an elderly woman Monday morning. Investigators believe Douglas Grant, 29, is still in the South Bend area. He's facing felony charges for arson and attempted murder.
The fire broke out around 1:30 Monday morning on North Diamond Street, just off Lincoln Way on the city’s northwest side.
At one point, investigators say Grant lived in the home he’s accused of setting on fire. The woman who rents rooms in the home recently asked Grant to move out. But according to investigators, he kept coming back.
Police were called to the home where the fire started at least three times over the past week. Charging documents provided by the prosecutor’s office say Grant was involved in a fight at the home last week, then threw a brick through the window in the home on Friday.
Later that day he hit a 16-year-old boy with a piece of concrete. Sunday morning Grant stabbed the 16-year-old with a knife.
St. Joseph County Prosecutor Mike Dvorak said Grant made a threat Sunday to kill all the people in the home.
Investigators aren’t saying exactly how the fire started, but witnesses told police they saw Grant running from the scene with a gas can after the fire started.
The prosecutor's office charged Grant with attempted murder, alleging he set the fire to kill the six people inside the home.
They escaped, but as the fire spread next door, their 92-year-old neighbor, Thula Ullrey, wasn’t as lucky — she suffered significant burns over a large portion of her body.
The fire trapped Ullrey in her second floor bedroom and firefighters rescued her. Aside from the burns on her body, she also suffered severe carbon monoxide poisoning.
Ron Christiana heard about the fire on the news, then went to the neighborhood to check on his granddaughter, who lives nearby.
“I’m not surprised,” he told WSBT as he knocked on his granddaughter’s door. “There are lots of drugs and lots of bad things happen [here].”
Christiana has walked the neighborhood for 20 years. He said scenes like that one are proof it’s only getting worse.
Police were still looking for Grant late Monday afternoon. Investigators believe he’s homeless, but has ties to both Chicago and Washington, D.C. Investigators say he should be considered dangerous.
Grant is described as black, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds, bald and with a tattoo of a panther on one arm.
Anyone with information about Grant’s whereabouts is asked to call Metro Homicide at 235-5009 or Crime Stoppers at (574) 288-STOP.
