MISHAWAKA — A man who nearly drowned Sunday while trying to swim across a gravel pit just east of the city has died.

According to Elkhart County Coroner John White, 19-year-old Steven Fisher, of Mishawaka, died at 11:38 a.m. today at Elkhart General Hospital.

Authorities said Fisher began struggling Sunday afternoon while trying to swim across the gravel pit near the corner of 12th Street and Blackberry Road. He disappeared beneath the water for several minutes before a bystander pulled him to shore, authorities said.

Fisher’s name had not previously been released, as authorities were waiting to advise family members of his condition.
