SOUTH BEND — A statement released Friday by Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center confirmed reports that President and CEO Nancy Hellyer will resign, and that her temporary replacement has been appointed.

Hellyer will remain in her position until Feb. 1, and cited "recent changes in her personal life" in her resignation according to the statement.

Hellyer will continue working on the move of the hospital from South Bend to its new location in Mishawaka. The new hospital is slated to open Dec. 14. She also will work with new interim President Tom Reitinger to find her replacement. Reitinger will join the medical center Monday.

The first part of the statement focused on the "many challenges" the hospital is facing because of the soft economy and the new $355 million hospital. The second part focused on Hellyer.

There was no connection made between the two parts of the statement.
