A 4-year-old girl continues her recovery after a dog attack last week, even as Elkhart neighbors and police continue the dispute over who is responsible.
Damonica Paul was in good condition at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis Sunday morning, following the Thursday afternoon attack when a pit bull bit her in the face.
The girl was attracted to the trampoline at the home of Tracy Crisler, in the 1700 block of Lane Avenue, witnesses told WSBT-TV. So she went through the Crisler’s back gate to join other children already playing there.
That much everyone agrees on — even if the children had been told before, Crisler said, to knock on the front door and let someone know they’re there.
“We didn’t know that the kids were even here at the time when all this took place,” said Crisler, who cares for the dog that investigators say bit Damonica.
But witnesses to the attack, including Shonda Adcock, say it was really a dog owned by Crisler’s neighbors that bit Damonica.
Adcock says Damonica bent down to get her shoes and that’s when the neighbor’s dog, after jumping the fence, attacked the little girl.
The unidentified neighbors, who declined to speak with WSBT on camera, say that wasn’t possible because their dog was chained inside the garage at the time.
Elkhart Police, however, say it was the animal in Crisler’s care who bit Damonica, according to Sgt. Wayne Bias.
“Through the investigation, we feel that it was the dog who lives at that residence who actually did the dog bite,” Bias said.
Crisler has been cited because she failed to register the animal with the city and it did not have its proper shots.
