SOUTH BEND — Just a little more than a year after breaking ground, construction on South Bend’s $200 million Eddy Street Commons project is nearly finished.

A section of Eddy Street will reopen to traffic next week and in September, tenants will begin opening their doors.

Among them: Chipotle Mexican Grill, Follett bookstore, Anytime Fitness, and Kildare’s Pub. A bank will also open along with Outpost Sports.

The second, third, and fourth floors of the development will be home to 300 resident units. Sixty-two will be ready for move-in next week and a rental office spokesperson said they’re already 75 percent full.

The development, across the street from Notre Dame, includes 86,000 square feet of retail space and 75,000 square feet of office space.

Ashley Bedell, project manager at Kite Realty Group, said development of a Fairfield Inn and Suites will begin in the next few weeks.

South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke said it’s among the biggest developments he can recall.

“It's really terrific to, particularly given the economy, to have this kind of investment in our community," said Luecke.

“Having some place for the students to go to eat or shop or do other stuff kind of gives (the area) a better feel,” said Courtney Leader, as she walked past the development on her way to the Notre Dame campus.
