(WSBT) The scare of a possible outbreak appears to be over for parents in Elkhart after an 8-year-old died from bacterial meningitis last week. Now his mother is talking about the horrible ordeal.

Tresa Underwood says her son, Dennis Gross, Jr., showed no symptoms until the day he died. She says his symptoms progressed quickly. He vomited, had a fever and then started seizing.

Tresa rushed her son to the hospital. By that afternoon, he had died. His family doesn't know how he contracted the illness.

“I honestly thought going to the hospital that, you know, maybe he just had a bad case of the flu or something, you know,” she told WSBT News. “Not nothing that he have a germ in him that could kill him within a couple of hours that has no sign, no path, no trace, that leaves nothing when it's coming nothing when it's gone.”

Underwood had lost another son about four years ago. He was 13 months old and had a congenital illness.

If you’d like to make a donation to help with funeral expenses, you can go to any Teachers Credit Union and donate to the Dennis Gross, Jr., Memorial Fund.
