Animal Control Officers Busy In Cold Conditions

By Jerry Siefring

(WSBT) Most people remember to take care of themselves when it's cold outside, but many forget their pets.

That is keeping animal control officers busy. Since the weekend, the Elkhart County Humane Society received more than 40 calls to rescue animals without proper food, water or shelter.

Many dogs they impounded suffered from frost bite on their paws and ears.

“We're getting a lot of animals in that are suffering, and that's something that a lot of people aren't realizing,” said Eric Durcinka of the Elkhart County Humane Society. “When they leave their animal outside...even though they have fur, they can still suffer from frost bite.”

The best advice -- keep your pets indoors during subzero temperatures.
