SOUTH BEND — More people are looking for ways to make ends meet during these tough economic times. Some are cleaning out their houses to fill up their wallets. Pawn shops can be a quick and easy way to get some cash in your pocket. All you need is an item for collateral.

Ozark's Pawn Shop in South Bend has been in business for about 20 years. The shop has seen a 25 percent increase in business in the last year and a half. More customers are bringing in items to pawn, even some people who have never been to a pawn shop before.

“Sometimes you're running a little short between paychecks and just get some money when you need it,” said customer Melissa Wesley.

The pawn shop accepts all kinds of merchandise, including tools, electronics and jewelry. But as more desperate people bring in worthless items, the pawn shop has had to turn some things away.

Owner Vendel Vegh, also known as Ozark, said that’s hard for him to do.

“Most of the time they don't have food for the kids to eat at home and the mother comes in need of money,” said Ozark.

People can buy back their items, with interest, within four months.

These days, fewer people are returning to collect their possessions, so their items are put up for sale. Most of the items are used, so buying customers can often find a good deal.
