SOUTH BEND - Two teens were stuffed in the trunk of their car early Friday after being robbed and carjacked in an apartment parking lot, police said.

The 18- and 19-year-old men told police they were robbed at gunpoint at 832 N. Notre Dame Ave. as they were exiting their car about 10:40 p.m.

Two other men arrived soon after and took the keys to the teens’ car, the teens told police. The three men drove the teens to various ATMs and forced them to withdraw several hundred dollars, police said.

The men then forced the teens into the trunk of the car. The car was going east on McKinley Avenue at 1:30 a.m. when a South Bend police officer noticed the car’s high-beam lights and began following it, said Capt. Phil Trent, South Bend police spokesman.

The car sped up and police began pursuing it, Trent said. The chase ended when the car sideswiped a parked vehicle in the 1200 block of East Madison Street and came to a stop.

The three men ran away before police reached the vehicle. Police heard “commotion” inside the car and found the teens in the trunk, Trent said.

One of the teens had a cut on his ear but refused medical treatment, Trent said.

Police later found three suspects near the scene but did not have enough evidence to arrest them.

Police expect to gather enough evidence from the car to charge the suspects, Trent said.
