MISHAWAKA — Police officers trying to subdue a suicidal man accidentally Tasered one of their own Tuesday.

According to police reports, officers responded about 3 p.m. to a suicide attempt on the city’s southwest side, where they found a 37-year-old man standing outside the home holding a knife.

Police surrounded the man, with weapons drawn, and talked with him about dropping the weapon. But police say the man refused and began walking toward officers.

Police then shot the man with a bean bag fired from a shotgun, which caused the man to stop. Police say the man then told officers to shoot him again.

Police did, forcing the man to drop the knife.

Sgt. Michael Janicki reported that he then dropped on top of the man, trying to place him in handcuffs.

But another officer, Detective Jeremy Tyler, fired a Taser at the same moment, with one of the barbs hitting Janicki on the ring finger on his right hand.
