SOUTH BEND — Officials administering a federal grant to prevent and reduce homelessness advise landlords and utility companies to be aware of a possible scam.

The problem may not be widespread. But at least one area landlord has reported that a prospective tenant tried to use a fake voucher as proof of enrollment in the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program, according to the Madison Center, one of the agencies that is overseeing the new program.

The grant money can be used to pay for rent. Officials with the program advise landlords and utility companies to work directly with a program representative on the client’s behalf.

Authorized representatives work for either South Bend’s Center for the Homeless, Madison Center, Dismas House or Youth Service Bureau. They must also present proper identification. If a landlord or other possible recipient has any questions, they should call the agency that the person claims to represent.
