WALKERTON ― Investigators are ruling an early morning fire in downtown Walkerton as arson. Both Police and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s office are now investigating.

The state investigator says the natural gas line in the building was tampered with, and if a passer-by hadn't spotted the fire and ran to police, it could have exploded.

This happened just before 1 a.m. Monday in the 600 block of Roosevelt Road.

The investigator says the fire started in a vacant part of the building that was a fireworks store until 2003. Upstairs, however, there are still apartments, and one of them was occupied at the time of the fire.

The investigator also says there could have been a risk of the fire spreading to nearby businesses.

No one has been arrested, but police are looking at a person of interest.
