SOUTH BEND — Making your home energy efficient could save you hundreds of dollars. The big-ticket items you can add to reduce your high energy bills are insulation and a high-efficiency furnace. There are plenty of simple steps you can take that will also help you cut your spending.

A programmable thermostat is a wise investment.

“That is your biggest chance for energy savings if you can’t afford a high-energy furnace, or to have a professional contractor insulate your house,” said Rich Gadacz, REAL Services weatherization program manager. The thermostat, which costs about $30, can be programmed to set back the temperature when you are asleep or not at home.

Changing light bulbs is another bright idea for energy savings. Gadacz said everyone should use energy-efficient florescent light bulbs. He said they last longer and use less energy.

He also recommends putting an insulation jacket on your hot water heater. The $15 item can be found at most home improvement stores, and keeps the water longer so it doesn’t need reheated.

Also, install a low-flow showerhead. The showerhead will reduce the amount of water you use. Gadacz said it is another inexpensive measure to reduce your monthly bills.
