Man arrested in South Bend after shots are fired

SOUTH BEND — A police officer waiting for a traffic light to change early Sunday morning saw a man fire a gun at somebody else and take off.

The officer was able to stop the car the 21-year-old man was driving and arrested him on suspicion of felony battery and criminal recklessness.

The officer was stopped at Western Avenue and St. Joseph Street about 2:40 a.m. Sunday when he saw someone standing outside the driver’s door of a car parked at Western Avenue and Michigan Street yelling at a man standing on the sidewalk.

According to police, the officer saw the man outside the car pull out a handgun and fire three shots at the pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a 22-year-old South Bend man, was not hit by any of the shots.
