SOUTH BEND — Production of a locally-made seasonal treat has started. You will soon be able to find Chocolate Charlie on store shelves.

A peak inside Claeys Candies is sure to make your mouth water, especially when they make Chocolate Charlie candy treats.

“If you're a chocolate lover, you'll love it because it's a combination of pure milk chocolate, fresh roasted peanuts, creamy fluffy marshmallow and it just makes you smile,” said Gregg Claeys, president.

Claeys said his workers make the ooey, gooey treat the same way his father and grandfather did. The decades-old recipe begins with marshmallow made from scratch. It is formulated and cooked in copper kettles, poured out on tables to cool, then cut into cubes.

The marshmallow is mixed with fresh-roasted peanuts, a dash of coconut, and melted chocolate. Workers put the mixture into trays by hand.

“That's what really makes Chocolate Charlies so unique, people just don't do it that way today because it’s so labor intensive,” said Claeys.

The special treat gets wrapped up and sent to stores. Many people are eager to get a bite.

“I think the main reason is that we only make is seasonally, so you can't buy it year round, so it’s something you look forward to,” said Claeys.

People will not have to wait much longer; Chocolate Charlie candy will begin hitting store shelves by the end of this week.
