The increasing number of people sick with the flu is cause for concern at blood banks.

The South Bend Medical Foundation normally sees a drop in the number of donors around the holidays. But this year that drop hit hard and early.

Recently there has been a significant decline in the number of blood donors, and the foundation says it's because of illnesses like the flu.

"We are used to seeing the seasonal flu, but this year it hit much earlier and in greater numbers than what we are used to,” said Kay Clark-Cox, who works in blood donor recruitment.

“So rather than seeing the decline in donors closer to Thanksgiving, we are now seeing it quite a few weeks before Thanksgiving. So we are asking those healthy donors to please come out and donate in our time of need."

While everyone is encouraged to donate this time of year, donors must be healthy for 72 hours before giving blood.

To check blood type supply levels, locations and times for donating, and see how you can help, check the Web at http://www.givebloodnow.com/ or call (574) 234-1157.
