LAPORTE — A LaPorte man has died more than a year after striking his head in a fall outside a bar during a physical confrontation.

Gregory Oman, 45, died Tuesday at an extended-care facility in Merrillville.

His brother, Glenn Oman, also of LaPorte, did not want to comment about the death.

“We’re in the process of grieving. Let’s leave it at that right now,” Oman said.

LaPorte police said Oman on Aug. 31, 2008, was inside Friends bar on Washington Street with a woman.

Witnesses told police another man flirted with the woman, and both men went outside. Oman fell during a confrontation, striking his head on the sidewalk or curb.

The other man was taken into custody but was later released when prosecutors ruled there was not sufficient evidence to hold him accountable for Oman’s injuries.

Authorities said there were conflicting statements on who initiated the contact.

Police said there have been no new developments or additional evidence that would change the status of the case, which remains open.
