Student-proposed gang dialogue planned in Elkhart

Three Concord High School students proposed a community forum about gangs. Now, the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is helping organize the event.

Event: “Gang Prevention: A Community Project”

When: 7 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 10)

Where: Beickman Performing Arts Center, Concord High School, 59117 Minuteman Way, Elkhart

Who: Parents and students from throughout the community are invited

A panel of community leaders, teachers, law enforcement, including gang specialists from Elklhart and Goshen police departments and others will discuss key issues and answer questions.

To stimulate discussion, students are distributing questionnaires in advance of Tuesday’s forum, asking among other questions:

  • “Why do you think people join gangs?”

  • “Which ethnicity is at higher risk of joining a gang?”

  • “Why do you think gangs exist?”
