Two men were injured, one seriously, late Thursday night, when a loose horse crashed through the windshield of a van being driven on Ind. 13, south of County Road 30, a mile north of Millersburg.

The horse’s body trapped a front seat passenger, Doyle Wingard, 18, of Shipshewana, in the van. He was airlifted to Memorial Hospital of South Bend, where he is listed in serious condition with internal head injuries and a broken wrist.

The driver, Jeremy Wingard, 21, of Ligonier, was taken to Goshen General Hospital for treatment of head pain. There was no information available on his condition from a hospital spokesman.

Jeremy Wingard was cited for driving with a suspended license. He tested positive for alcohol in his system, according to an Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department report.

The horse died. The horse’s owner was cited for allowing the animal to stray.
