WINAMAC – Police say a body has been pulled from the Tippecanoe River.

According to police, around 12 a.m. on Wednesday a Winamac resident heard shouts near the river. The witness saw the body floating in the river and waded into neck-deep water and pulled the body to the shoreline.

The witness attempted to revive the victim but was unsuccessful, say police.

The Winamac Fire Department arrived on-scene and was also unsuccessful in their efforts to revive the victim, described as a black female appearing to be in her mid 40’s. She was pronounced dead on the scene by the Pulaski County Coroner’s office.

Indiana Conservation Officers and the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene and located an unlocked vehicle with keys in the ignition parked on the road near the bridge on CR 250 North that crosses the Tippecanoe River. According to police, the vehicle is believed to be owned by the victim.

Conservation Officers are trying to confirm the identity of the victim and are investigating how she got in the water. She was recovered approximately ¼ to ½ mile downstream.

The body has yet been identified. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday to determine her cause of death.

Indiana conservation officers dive team and K9 units were also on scene to search for evidence, but no evidence was recovered at the scene. Indiana conservation officers will be conducting the death investigation.
