Syracuse man in serious condition after crashing moped into ditch

SYRACUSE – A Syracuse man is in serious condition after crashing his moped on Ind. 13, east of Nash Drive, Thursday afternoon.

According to witnesses, Jerry Werenicz, 59, was driving northbound when he began to swerve. He drove off the right side of the road, striking his head in the ditch line. He was wearing a bicycle helmet.

Police say Werenicz was transported by Syracuse EMS to Wawasee High School where he was airlifted by Lutheran Air to the intensive care unit of Lutheran Memorial.

The Kosciusko County F.A.C.T/critical accident team is still investigating the crash.

The F.A.C.T team was assisted by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and Syracuse EMS/Fire.
