Elkhart Police search for child molester who posted bail and fled

An Elkhart County judge sentenced a convicted child molester to 247 years in prison this week, but authorities don't know where he is.

Roberto Vasquez, 53, of Chicago is accused of repeatedly molesting a 13-year-old acquaintance in Elkhart for five years.

Last month, a jury convicted him, but wasn’t in the courtroom to hear the verdict.

“He appeared during the trial and may have seen that things were going south and decided not to come back,” said Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill.

Sheriff’s Dept. officials say Vasquez posted the $300,000 bail before his trial started.

As authorities continue to search for him, a judge sentenced Vasquez to 247 years behind bars on Thursday.
