A man walking his dog late Friday night saw bright light and realized something was wrong at his neighbor's house in the 3000 block of East Empire Avenue in Benton Harbor.

The house was on fire and though the man saw his neighbor's vehicles were not at the house, he made sure no one was inside.

When Benton Township firefighters arrived just before 11 p.m., “the house was fully involved . The house had substantial fire coming from the basement windows,” Fire Lt. Malcolm Cowan told WSBT.

Fire destroyed the three-level home, Cowan said. A fire department investigator will return to the scene later Saturday to search for a cause. The homeowner told firefighters the family left the house around 9 p.m.

Firefighters were on the scene for several hours; no firefighters were injured, Cowan said.
