A woman who told police she swerved to avoid a deer, crashed her passenger van early today and is in fair condition in a Kalamazoo, Mich., hospital.

The accident occurred southeast of Decatur, Mich., on 88th Avenue, east of County Road 669 in Van Buren Township.

Lorraine Monica Stanek, 50, of Marcellus, told Van Buren County police she was traveling east on 88th Avenue when she swerved to avoid hitting a deer. She said she veered to the left and lost control of the vehicle, which then left the roadway, struck a tree, rolled over and ended up on its roof.

According to a police report, Stanek suffered multiple head injuries and was transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich.

The accident happened about 12:20 a.m.

The report said Stanek was wearing a seat belt, but that speed was likely a factor in the accident.
