Police have captured Luis Briones, the man accused of shooting an 18-year-old on South Bend’s west side Oct. 27.

Briones was arrested today in Michigan's Cass County, said Tim Corbett, commander of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit.

Police had been searching for Briones, 25, for nearly two weeks.

Briones, of South Bend, is being held in the Cass County Jail, Corbett said. He will be transported to South Bend in the coming days.

Briones allegedly shot South Bend resident Delvon Davidson as Davidson was riding in a car down Falcon Street last month.

The bullet shattered Davidson’s spine, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down, his family said.

Doctors say he will never breathe, talk or walk on his own.

“I'm just glad they caught (Briones),” said Patricia Miller, Davidson’s mother. “I'm glad he's off the street and not in a position to do this to someone else's family.”

A witness said there was a “beef” between Davidson and Briones.

Davidson’s condition has worsened recently, his mother said. One of his lungs has collapsed and he has been running a fever for 14 days.

“He’s holding on; he’s fighting,” Miller said.

Briones has been charged with attempted murder, carrying a handgun without a license, criminal recklessness, and being a felon in possession of a handgun.

If Davidson does not survive, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office will review the charges against Briones, officials said.

The arrest was made with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshals Service, Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, Corbett said.
