A 27-year-old Elkhart man was flown to a South Bend hospital Tuesday evening after a rollover accident near Wakarusa.

Thomas Nelson remained in serious condition early Wednesday after the 5:41 p.m. crash on County Road 32 near Indiana 19.

Nelson was the driver of a vehicle that was headed east when, according to a witness, he left the roadway on one side and veered back across the other side before heading into a cornfield.

His vehicle then went airborne, rolling over and striking a tree, the witness told police.

A passenger, 50-year-old Tracey Tweedy, of Elkhart, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.

The Elkhart County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team continued their investigation into the accident.
