Plastic Bags Galore

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) Americans use about 380 billion plastic bags a year. Environmentalists are concerned about that because they say many don't get recycle and can be harmful to the environment.

A group of students at IUSB wanted to know how many of those bags are used right here in Michiana. So they tried to find out with the first annual BagFest.

People were asked to bring all their plastic bags from home so students could count them and throw them into a large cage to be recycled.

One of the biggest shipments arrived just before noon in a Wal-Mart semi. Thousands of bags from Niles were dropped off for students to count.

BagFest was designed to raise awareness about the environmental and economic impact of plastic bags.

Anyone who brought in more than 50 bags was given a reusable cloth bag to use instead.
