SOUTH BEND — Police are holding a juvenile male in connection with a fatal shooting early Saturday a few blocks west of Memorial Hospital.

According to Tim Corbett, commander of the county’s Metro Homicide Unit, the boy was taken into custody at the scene of the shooting and then questioned and arrested on suspicion of reckless homicide and possession of a handgun without a permit.

The boy’s name and age have not been released.

The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. at a home at 1013 Lindsey St., one block north of Lincoln Way West.

According to Corbett, the victim and suspect were involved in a dispute of some sort prior to the shooting, and “drugs, drinking, and gambling” were involved.

The victim, an 18-year-old male, was shot in the upper torso, Corbett said, and pronounced dead at the scene.

His name has not been released.

Several people witnessed the shooting, Corbett said, and it remains under investigation.

He declined to release any other details.

A neighbor on Saturday pointed out to a Tribune reporter the home where the shooting occurred, but no one answered the door at the house.

It is the only home on either side of the block.
