Investigators Point to Cigarettes as Cause of Park Jefferson Fire

By Michael Guilmette

(WSBT) Investigators say unattended cigarette butts started a massive South Bend apartment fire.

The fire destroyed a Park Jefferson apartment building Monday, leaving 50 people without homes.

They say the cigarette butts ignited the apartment and the wind helped spread it.

Park Jefferson employees said they do have a firewall in the middle of the building, but the wind caused flames to leap over it.

The apartment complex is still helping people find new apartments.
