GRANGER — A couple considered their toddler's crib a place for sweet dreams. Now, they want to share their nightmare after a close call with a Stork Craft crib, part of the nation's largest-ever recall on cribs.

100 cases of injuries were reported and at least four children suffocated. When Michelle Dobski heard her toddler Noah scream, she feared her son could have been the nation's fifth death if it was not for her quick action.

Dobski recounts what happened after her oldest child left for school Monday morning.

"He started screaming and I immediately ran," said Dobski.

She found the toddler's head wedged between the railings and the mattress on his crib, which he used for two years.

"He was completely stuck," Dobski said.

Michelle said she realized Noah's crib was no safe haven. It was more like a death trap.

"He was stuck," said Dobski. "I'm thinking ‘How did he fit his body through this?’"

Using what Michelle describes as "mommy strength" she said she pulled the railing off and she soon found out why her son was trapped.

"The plastic pieces were broken off," she said.

It was part of the largest-ever recall of cribs, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. 1.2 million cribs were recalled in the U.S. and one million more were recalled in Canada. The drop-down sides have a plastic piece that could detach and lead to a space big enough to allow a child to become trapped.

Dobski dialed 911. Officials from Clay Fire said they received a call, but the department was disregarded on the way to the scene. After Noah was freed, Dobski said he was quite the trooper, but Michelle said she had another reason to be concerned about her son's safety.

"My mother called me and said they are recalling these cribs," she said. "I thought ‘What kind of crazy coincidence is that?’"

Dobski went online and discovered her incident with the Stork Craft crib wasn't isolated.

"It makes me want to cry again," she said.

Now Noah and Michelle will have to get used to their share of sleepless nights.

"We're not using the crib anymore," she said.
