Noble County authorities say a woman and her dog died late Monday in a house fire near Kendallville.

The fire broke out just before 11:30 p.m. at the home on Leighty Road, according to the sheriff’s department.

The woman’s son lived nearby and tried to reach the 83-year-old but was unable to do so because of the smoke and flames, county dispatch said.

The name of the victim has not been released by the coroner.

The Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the blaze.
