(WSBT) For the second time in just three months, fire damaged a St. Joseph County church.

It broke out about 2:30 Sunday morning in the back of North Pointe Bible Church along State Road 23 in Granger. It took Harris Township fire crews 6,000 gallons of water to put the fire out.

The small congregation held Sunday services outside, as local and federal investigators worked behind them to find out how the fire started.

"Anytime there's a church fire there is a level of suspicion with it that we have to rule out everything. And right now they're doing a thorough investigation on that," said Chief John Vance with the Harris Township Fire Department.

"The church is the people here," said Philip Lubensky, a member of the church. "We're here. We're healthy. Nobody was hurt last night. Nobody was in the church and we sure thank the Lord for that."

Church members say arson was to blame for a small fire there in February that did $20,000 in damage. Sunday morning's fire was a total loss. So far, investigators have not ruled this fire suspicious. They're still investigating.
