Brother of Local Man Accused of Having Terrorist Ties Deported

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) The brother of a local man, accused of having ties to terrorism, is deported.

Kurdish immigrants, Ibrahim Parlak and his brother Huseyin, have been fighting to stay in the United States. Monday, Huseyin lost that battle.

Several of the people who have supported Ibrahim in the past, gathered Monday at his restaurant in Harbert, Michigan.

Huseyin had been living in the United States on a student visa.

A spokesperson with Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Monday, that because Huseyin does not attend school, he has failed to maintain his status in the United States.

Huseyin is seeking political asylum, claiming past persecution in Turkey. His application was denied, and he is in the appeals process.

Huseyin learned Friday his motion to stay during the appeals process was denied.

During a routine meeting with immigration officials in Detroit Monday, Huseyin was arrested.

Within hours, Ibrahim learned his brother was on a plane back to Turkey.

“He doesn't have clothes, he doesn't have enough money with him, he doesn't have anything, and they didn't give us a chance to say bye to him,” said Ibrahim.

The same group that gathered for Huseyin has gathered before for Ibrahim.

“This is just insane. I don't know what to think,” commented supporter Martin Dzuris.

The federal government has also been trying to deport Ibrahim. It accuses Ibrahim of not disclosing all the details concerning his connection to a resistance group in Turkey.

The group is classified as terrorist.

Ibrahim says his brother has never done anything wrong.

“Why? They do this because he's my brother and that's just not right,” said Ibrahim.

Huseyin had feared going back to Turkey.

“When he applied, he asked, ‘If you deny my application for political asylum, let me voluntarily deport,’ which means he would have bought a ticket to go to Germany, Switzerland, where he'd be safe and where he has family,” explained Dzuris.

His deportation has left Parlak’s supporters, once again, trying to come up with a plan.

“This isn't just about Huseyin or Ibrahim. It's about how our country is handling immigration,” said supporter Christina Root.

They hope, whatever happens, it brings Huseyin home.

Huseyin has been arrested in Turkey in the past. Once was for a human rights demonstration, and another time, he said the military arrested him due to his relationship with his brother.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement could not confirm Huseyin's deportation. A spokesperson says they can only confirm it once the officers with him are on land.
