LAPORTE COUNTY – Police say a Fish Lake man who was driving during an early Sunday morning crash has been charged with operating while intoxicated, causing a death.

The single-vehicle accident happened a little before 4 a.m., say police. A vehicle driven by 30-year-old Jacob Christner was travelling along Hupp Road, east of U.S. Highway 35.

The road narrows to one lane because of construction, but Christner failed to merge into the westbound lane and struck a concrete barrier, say police. Officers arrived at the scene to find 31-year-old Brad Boilini, of LaPorte, deceased in the back seat.

Another man, Paul Chlupacek of Walkerton, fled the scene. He has since been located by police. They say he sustained minor injuries in the wreck.

Christner sustained several minor cuts but refused medical attention. It was determined that he had a .20% blood alcohol concentration at the time of the crash. He was released from LaPorte County Jail after posting a $3,500 bond, and will appear in LaPorte County Circuit Court later in the week.

Police say there were signs and barrels posted that warned of the lane closure. The pavement was slick from sleet and freezing rain.

Police are still investigating.
