A Mishawaka family was able to escape from a mobile home fire Sunday, but the home was severely damaged.

The fire was reported just before 5 p.m. Firefighters were sent to an address in the 1500 block of East McKinley, city dispatch said, as the residents quickly got outside.

But the fire destroyed the home, according to a WSBT photojournalist at the scene. Investigators were looking to see whether it started in the bedroom.

The local chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family of four, which includes a 6-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl, with food and winter coats for the children.

The family will stay with relatives, according to county dispatch. But Mishawaka Fire Chief Mike Croy said the home was a total loss.

And that includes the family's Christmas tree and all their presents.

Fire Marshal Jeff Holland said the fire was electrical in nature, and started in the ceiling of a spare bedroom where the family was keeping Christmas gifts. The family has no insurance coverage, he told WSBT by telephone.

A stretch of East McKinley remained closed Sunday night as emergency crews remained at the scene.

Officials said they hoped to have the road — shut down between Lynn and Fir — opened by about 6:30 p.m.

Shortly after the Mishawaka fire, a second home on South Bend's west side erupted in flames. That fire, in the 24500 block of Ardmore Trail, was reported about 8 p.m. Sunday.

Authorities said the occupants and a pet were able to escape, but the house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Crews remain at the scene in South Bend, with Ardmore Trail completely shut down in both directions.
