A buggy accident in LaGrange County Sunday night has left a woman in serious condition.

The accident happened about 9:25 p.m. along Indiana 5 near Eden Township when the southbound driver, 29-year-old Gary Eash, of Topeka, was distracted and looked away from the road.

Eash told police that when he looked back up, he was partly in the Amish buggy lane and could not avoid hitting a buggy with nine people in it, driven by Gerald Bontrager, 33, of Ligonier.

One of the passengers, Mary Sue Bontrager, 32, of Ligonier, was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment. She was upgraded from critical to serious condition Monday, nursing staff said.

Three children inside the buggy, including a 1-month-old baby, were taken to a hospital in LaGrange for care.

There was no immediate word on their conditions, but the baby was treated as a precaution, according to the LaGrange County Sheriff's Department report.

There were no charges filed because of the accident.
