The Mishawaka Fire Department was on scene shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday to battle smoke and flames shooting from a Dairy Queen restaurant.

The fire was reported about 2:15 p.m. at the store, located at the intersection of Main Street and McKinley Avenue.

Customers and workers in the store were able to evacuate as smoke filled the building. Nobody was hurt in the blaze.

Staff told WSBT-TV that one employee first noticed smoke. Firefighters say the fire may have started in the ceiling.

The Dairy Queen just opened after being closed for renovations. The owner said he spent $300,000 and closed the store for 30 days for improvements.

He plans to fix the damage and reopen as soon as he can.
