It’s sunny Monday, but Michiana could receive 8 to 12 inches of snow during a winter storm expected to arrive late Monday night.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for late Monday night through Wednesday evening.

A low-pressure system developing over the southern plains is moving northeast, according to the National Weather Service. Snow associated with that system is expected to arrive in northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan late Monday night and Tuesday.

The snow is expected to become heavy Tuesday and Tuesday night, with blowing and drifting snow developing as winds increase. Near-blizzard conditions are possible by Wednesday, with winds 20 to 30 mph, gusting to 40 mph.

Daytime highs are expected to be in the mid-20s, with lows around 20, but wind chills will make to seem much colder.

Drifting and blowing snow could make travel hazardous, particularly in rural areas, according the weather service.
