Judge Delays Finley Sentencing; Defendant Asks For Mitigation Expert

By Jim Pinkerton

(WSBT) The teen who admitted to shooting and killing a South Bend police officer wants help before he's sentenced.

A judge delayed sentencing for Jeff Finley Tuesday so he can hire a mitigation expert to review the case. That expert would look at circumstances which do not justify or excuse the crime, but may reduce the sentence.

Finley pleaded guilty last month to killing Cpl. Scott Severns. He could face life in prison, without parole.

The judge scheduled another hearing on Thursday to set a new sentencing date.
