Officers, Community Members Tee It Up for Severns and Future Heroes

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) Saturday community members and local police enforcement took part in a charity golf outing for fallen South Bend police officer Cpl. Scott Severns.

One hundred forty-four golfers hit the links in a scramble style tournament at Blackthorn Golf club to raise money for a memorial wall that will be erected in Southlawn Cemetery. The cemetery donated about ten acres of land that will be a free resting place for South Bend, Mishawaka and St. Joseph County police officers to honor all heroes for their hard work and dedication.

“A lot of the stuff is being donated but the wall itself is going to be quite costly and it's in Scott’s honor ... and everybody’s honor,” said Kathy Karczewski, Scott’s mother.

Saturday’s golf outing — along with a $10,000 check from Applebee’s restaurant — raised about $35,000. The memorial wall will cost about $300,000 all together. Anyone can make a donation to the Scott Severns Memorial Fund at any Policemen's Federal Credit Union.

Organizers of the memorial tournament hope it becomes an annual event.
