Chili Recalled for Fear of Botulism

(WSBT) The Food and Drug Administration is investigating what could be the first case of botulism in commercially canned foods in decades. The recall involves cans of hot dog chili sauce.

Four cases have been reported to the Food and Drug Administration, including two in Indiana.

The recall applies to 10-ounce cans of Castleberry's, Austex, and Kroger brands of hot dog chili sauce with "Best By" dates from April 30, 2009 through May 22, 2009.

Symptoms of botulism include blurred vision, drooping eyelids, and slurred speech. Eventually, paralysis can cause a person to stop breathing.

Voluntary Recall

Castleberry’s Food Company is voluntarily recalling the products listed below. The recall only affects those products listed below with a “Best By” date of April 30, 2009 through May 22, 2009. Castleberry’s is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate possible contamination of these products.

7) Is this contamination dangerous?
It can be. That is why it is important to throw away any product that is included in this recall. We want to be proactive to ensure the safety of our products and the health of our loyal consumers. Affected product should be thrown away even if it does not look or smell spoiled.

8) What if I have eaten the affected product?
If you have eaten the affected product and are experiencing the following symptoms, you should seek immediate medical care. Symptoms may include general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms.
