SOUTH BEND — Melissa DeMatteo is the proud mom of 2-year-old twins Kameron and Aiden. She said they are the best of friends.

“They are really close,” said DeMatteo. “So it's nice, because with a singleton you have one that you have to keep occupied and stuff like that. They keep each other occupied.”

The number of twins born in the U.S. has doubled since the 1980s, which means more families are faced with the challenges of raising two, three or more children at the same time.

Parents may experience difficulties in pregnancy, financial hardships and educational concerns, such as whether or not to separate the multiples in school.

“There are definitely trials,” said Kelly Hosang, mother of 3-year-old twins Brandon and Tyler. “There are times when it's harder. There's one more person to take care of,” she said.

“Some days I want to rip my hair out, but other than that, it's great,” added DeMatteo.

Both moms have found support in the Michiana Parents of Multiples Club. They get information about raising multiples and enjoy outings together. The club strives to educate and offer emotional support to parents.

The group also participates in community events, such as March for Babies, Sunburst, donating meals for the Ronald McDonald house, and volunteering at the Niles Haunted House.

Group members have found raising twins can be a bounty.

“It’s twice the benefits, twice the rewards, and twice the love that comes,” Hosang said.

Despite the challenges of raising twins, these moms would not want it any other way.
