Conflict Continues over Four Winds Casino Revenue Divide

By Tiffany Griffin

(WSBT) Four Winds Casino opened last month, but a lawsuit could be filed Wednesday over how a percentage of the revenue from the casino will be divided. If a suit is filed, the money the casino gives to local governments could be tied up until it is settled.

Representatives from New Buffalo Township and Berrien County chose New Buffalo Schools rather than the city of New Buffalo as the third member of the three member board. That board will decide how to divide money the casino pays to local communities.

One board member says they made the decision because the schools stand to get the highest percentage of money from the casino, outside of New Buffalo Township and the County of Berrien. The school's superintendent told WSBT News he satisfied with the arrangement.

"I just can't envision myself or anyone else with our organization will be standing there asking for a lot more money," said Dr. Michael Lindsey. "I think it will go to the other municipalities, who aren't receiving the payment in lieu of taxes."

However, New Buffalo's mayor says his city is impacted by the casino more than the school district.

"I don't think there's a question that we should get the third seat. Just drive around our community and you can see we're going to be the most impacted," New Buffalo Mayor Bob Westergren told WSBT in July.
