Tax Woes May Affect St. Joe Library Expansion

By Tiffany Griffin

(SBT24/7News) Indiana’s property tax problems are affecting the St. Joseph County Public Library’s plans to build two new branches and expand the four city branches.

The county library hasn’t received an answer yet from the state on a proposal to issue $18 million in bonds to finance the expansion and renovation projects.

Meanwhile, county library patrons are getting restless for the improvements, library director Donald Napoli said.

"I have a lot of people saying, ‘Where are these buildings?’ I can’t give them an answer," Napoli told the library board this week.

The library system in June sought approval for the bond issue to build a German Township Branch, build a new Francis Branch, and renovate and expand the LaSalle, Western, Tutt and River Park branches.
