(WSBT) Funeral services are set for a local soldier killed in Iraq.

Sgt. Nick Patterson was one of seven soldiers killed in a non-combat related rollover accident.

Patterson graduated from Rochester High School in 2001. Many people in town knew him. They remember Patterson as a popular athlete and a kind person.

Many tuned in Thursday night as President Bush announced plans to bring home 5,700 U.S. forces by Christmas and at least 21,000 by July.

They say having a local soldier killed brings the war closer to home.

"You hear about everybody losing somebody and you feel so bad for them, but when it hits home like this, it's even more devastating,” said Gloria Andrews, who knows Patterson’s family.

"You gotta be proud of Nick, he was proud of his country,” said Connie Scharnhorst. “You have to be proud of Nick.”

Patterson's body should arrive home by Monday. Visitation is set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Rochester High School. His funeral is also at the high school Wednesday at 2 p.m.
