More Time Added to South Bend Man’s Prison Sentence for Killing Toddler

By Beth Boehne

(SBT24/7News) A 29-year-old man who was sentenced last week to 48 years in prison for the beating death of a 15-month-old girl will have to serve an additional 18 months in prison, according to a judge’s ruling Tuesday morning.

Judge Jerome Frese ordered Kwasi Barnes of South Bend to serve additional prison time for violating his probation in 2005 when he was charged with possession of cocaine. Barnes was serving a suspended sentence for an earlier theft conviction.

The prosecution today dismissed the 2005 possession of cocaine charge if Barnes agreed to forego an evidentiary hearing on the state’s petition to revoke his probation.

Barnes is appealing his battery conviction for the 2005 death of DeNeja Coleman.
