(SBT24/7News) A loud lakeside party ended with 14 Penn High School athletes receiving underage drinking citations shortly after midnight Tuesday, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Authorities arrived at the Porter Township home in the 6500 block of Eby Road, off Shavehead Lake, and found one parent home and “a lot of kids all drinking,” Capt. Lyndon Parrish said.

The police report, he said, noted that the officers observed beer bottles at the home.

“The owner of the residence was allowing this drinking,” Parrish said. “We are seeking a warrant for her and we cited kids from age 16 on up, all under age.”

The teens were from Granger, South Bend, Mishawaka, Osceola and Cassopolis. One was 16 and the rest were 17 or 18, Parrish said.

A number of other teens ran away, but Parrish said the sheriff’s department has some of those names and is seeking charges against them, as well.

Teresa Carroll, communications director for Penn-Harris-Madison, said the athletic department was aware of the incident and is investigating.

“We will apply our student code of conduct,” she said. “ ... These students signed this code of conduct so they are aware of these consequences.”

The school, Carroll said, considers consumption or possession of alcohol a “serious offense” and the code of conduct states that for the first offense students will be suspended for 50 percent of the season contests.

Carroll said it was her understanding that all the students were involved in athletics and most of them were cheerleaders.

Parrish said the sheriff’s department is seeking a warrant against the homeowner for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a misdemeanor that carries up to a $1,000 fine.
