A 61-year old Hartford resident faces multiple charges stemming from a hit-and-run accident in Van Buren County Friday night, including motor vehicle theft, driving without a license, failing to report a traffic crash and open alcohol in a motor vehicle, the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release.

According to the press release, this is what happened:

The crash happened in the 48000 block of County Road 681 around 9:30 Friday night.

Deputies were unable to complete their investigation because of storms, but the following morning they received a call from a homeowner near the crash scene who had an unknown vehicle in their field.

The vehicle, a 94 Plymouth minivan, had extensive damage and was determined to be the car that left the scene of the previous night’s accident.

Deputies also noticed that the minivan had several empty and partially empty beer cans inside of it.

After tracking down the owner of the minivan, deputies learned that the vehicle had been stolen the night before.

Deputies found a suspect in a nearby migrant camp who admitted to taking the minivan without permission. The suspect also told police that he left the scene of the crash because he did not have a driver’s license.

The suspect remains in the Van Buren County Jail and the sheriff’s department is withholding his name pending arraignment.
