Outstanding Student Athlete: Tyler Ham
SOUTH BEND - For South Bend Adams senior Tyler Ham, golf is a numbers game.
"My favorite club is my gap wedge. It's my 110 (yard) club. I can spot it wherever I want it", says Ham.
"A big thing is knowing your distances. It can be the difference between a great shot, and a shot that looks good in the air but then drops ten feet short."
Which doesn't happen to to Tyler Ham very often, which is why his numbers on the course, are often pretty low. So far this season, Ham is carrying a 37 average for nine holes. One over par. Which puts him among the top prep golfers in the area.
"Tyler's a hard worker", says Adams golf coach Dave Spaulding. "He's usually the first one here and they last to go. He loves the game of golf"
Loves it so much, that it's not uncommon to find him on the course on the many cold, rainy South Bend afternoons this spring.
"A LOT of rainy days", Ham admits with a smile.
It's that kind of dedication that's allowed him to go from a complete beginner as a freshman, to nearly a scratch golfer in three short years.
"He's worked his way to being a really good golfer", says Spaulding.
Tyler's plan is to work his way right into a golf career. His numbers in the classroom, like on the course, are very good. A 3.0 student taking honors courses... Tyler plans on continuing his playing career in college, while working towards a business degree in the golf industry.
"PGA Tour is the dream", Ham says, "but definitely a career in the golf field is what I'd like to do."
